Liniang Du and Portia: An Interpretation of the Triumph of Women’s Rights in a Patriarchal Society
Abstract
Xianzu Tang and William Shakespeare were the representative figure of 17th century in both English and Chinese academic circles respectively. There are thought-provoking in the comparative study of two writings. In this paper, by comparing the Xianzu Tang’s Liniang Du in The Peony Pavilion and Portia in William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice in the marriage on the common pursuit of love, we study their resistance against the patriarchal, dominate their marriage and help their husbands. They show off women’s wisdom and courage and they are the image of women in the patriarchal society’s victory.
